The Return Of Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir

Looking to contribute your voice to something magical this month?

Eric Whitacre’s famed Virtual Choir is back for a fifth time, using technology to bring thousands of voices together from around the world. What started in 2009 with 185 singers on “Lux Aurumque” grew to nearly 8,500 singers from 101 countries on the last release, “Fly to Paradise.”

Previous iterations of the Virtual Choir have been featured as part of the 2012 Olympic Games and at events for the Kennedy Center, Google, the United Nations, and more. In 2013, Whitacre conducted a live virtual choir of 100 singers from 28 countries during a TED Conference using Skype.

Whitacre is now looking for singers for Virtual Choir 5: “Deep Field”, and it’s never been easier to take part! This piece, inspired by images captured by the Hubble Telescope, is “a tale of human aspiration, endeavor, wonder, and extraordinary scientific vision.”

Just how easy is it to join? All you have to do is watch the tutorials, practice, record, and submit—and you don’t even need to know how to read music. Parts are even divided into Level 1 and Level 2, so there is something for beginners as well as more advanced singers.

To get started, just sign up and follow the instructions.

Want to see what happens after you submit your part? Here are the previous choirs:

Virtual Choir 1: “Lux Aurumque”

Virtual Choir 2: “Sleep”

Virtual Choir 3: “Water Night”

Virtual Choir 4: “Fly To Paradise”

In 2014 in partnership with UNICEF, Whitacre also brought together 2,292 children in a virtual choir of “What If” sung in honor of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Will we see you in Virtual Choir 5? All submissions are due by June 27, 2018 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time.
