Introducing Club A Cappella

Tonight in London, Chapter One of the newest a cappella series will start in what we hope will be a long-running novel.

Club A Cappella is a brand new monthly a cappella show in central London, bringing four of the best all-vocal groups each month to gig together in one of the hottest live music venues in the city—Pizza Express Live (Holborn). It's presented by London Vocal Leaguehosted by WeAreTrackless, and curated by member and founder, Christopher Bartlett-Walford.

So just what can we expect? We spoke to Bartlett-Walford about the new series and he delivered some answers that should make all a cappella singers and fans in and passing through London pretty excited.

FloVoice: Why did you put this together?

Christopher Barlett-Walford: Outside of the U.K. a cappella festival scene and the collegiate world, there wasn't a regular a cappella gig where groups can share a bill on a frequent basis. So we made one. We're all looking to grow our audiences and gain support for our corner of the Live Music World, so what better way than to come together as a community and create exactly what we need.

It was whilst sitting in the green room as we filmed our episode of Sky One's SING: Ultimate A Cappella, that the idea hit me. We were surrounded by vocalists who all were supporting each other, all in different genres, all trying to be the best we can be whilst supporting each other. The energy was amazing. Why can't it be like this all the time? Well, it can.

By forming London Vocal League as a supportive, collaborative community of groups, we can band together under one umbrella, and grow our collective together. Each of LVL's member groups benefitting from working with each other.  In the London Vocal League, we've each got each other's backs.

If a London Vocal League member group releases a new single, we will all shout about it & be proud of one another. If someone releases a new video, then every group can share it about too. There's room for us all. Room for us all to be brilliant.

FV: What are you hoping this event will do for London and a cappella?

CBW: In short, bring our part of the a cappella world to a wider audience, and show the British scene is as good as any you'll find anywhere else.

Whether that be a more "mainstream" gig going audience who are used to seeing top artists in such a venue, or a more specific audience who are looking for their aca-fix. We want to bring the U.K. a cappella world up to speed with the rest of the world, and we're starting by partnering with one of London's leading live music venues with Pizza Express Live.

Eventually each show will be streamed live for those not in London, and we're already planning regional shows in the north, Wales, and beyond, plus hosting special editions in different venues around the country.

FV: What will each Chapter look like?

CBW: Each regular chapter will have up to four of the U.K.'s finest a cappella groups, each performing their best 25-minute set. From established TV groups to up and comers, there'll be a wide variety on display at each show. Each chapter will have a designated 'host' group, to tie things together on the night & introduce each group.

By sharing the gig, groups can be discovered and seen by a new wave of fans that each group brings with them, growing each group's reach every time they gig at Club A Cappella. Fans of NoVi may not have been to see WeAreTrackless live before, and maybe The Buzztones supporters, haven't heard of Afterparty, but with this series, we'll see more fan cross-pollination.

There will be special editions throughout the year in addition to the regular nights, where we'll be able to showcase more groups together and be able to have themed genre nights - Gospel, Jazz, Rock and more.

Every chapter will be recorded & London Vocal League will upload performances over time to social media & online platforms so that the member groups can continue to benefit from added exposure online. We know how expensive it is for groups to fund recording sessions and video shoots, so combining each of the gigs with this is just another way we're working together to grow the UK Scene both at home and internationally.

FV: How can groups get involved?

CBW: Groups can find more information enquire about being a member group at www.londonvocalleague.com or email apply@londonvocalleague.com. The best way, though, is by connecting with us at one of our live shows and having a chat with us after. We're also happy to talk to people the other side of things who want to get involved and support our groups in other ways too (off-stage).

FV: What can the audience expect?

CBW: One Hell of a show! Your favorite songs, sung in ways you'd never expect, by the best all-vocal talent in the UK!

It's an exciting, thrilling night, full of energy, harmony, and joy. The best way to experience a cappella is to see it live, and Club A Cappella will be your new monthly must-book event.
