Boston & LA Harmony Sweeps Set For Face-Off

The last two spots for 2018 Harmony Sweepstakes National Finals will be decided tonight in Boston and Los Angeles. The winners of the two regionals will join Ro Sham Bo, 20/20, Feedback, Up All Night, and Due North in San Rafael, California, on May 19.

BOSTON REGIONAL

On the East Coast, eight groups will compete for a ticket to California with a special guest performance by last year’s regional champion, Fireside Quartet. This year’s competitors include:

Sound Off

Going strong for more than five years, Sound Off is a founding member of the Contemporary A Cappella League and has become a mainstay of the Boston vocal music scene. This group brings lots of pop and lots of soul to its performances. Sound Off recently won the CARA for Best CAL Album.

Bostonality

This Cambridge group considers itself to be very Boston. Its members are a cappella addicts with a need to sing and share their stories, and you can expect high-energy songs and large personalities from their performance.

4ManTent

These 20-somethings with a love for barbershop music are only new to the stage as a group. You may recognize some of their members from Bostonality and Fermata Town.

Blacklight

This sextet recently burst onto the a cappella scene with some of New England’s most recognizable voices. Blacklight's members consider themselves modern and focused on the audience experience, so expect to have some fun with their set.

Collective Measures

Another Boston-based Contemporary A Cappella League group, this semi-mixed group of 14 has an affinity for challenging arrangements and mashups of everything from country to pop to Alt-J.

Daily Special

Formed less than a year ago, this barbershop quartet based in southern New England is on a mission to make music, share music, and be a little bit silly.

Deception

A six-member group out of Danvers High School, Deception is one of the youngest competitors nationwide. Known for covers of current hits, this fairly new group has its sights set on progressively larger stages. Will Sweeps be Deception's first big shot?

Mass Whole Notes

Based right out of Somerville, this post-collegiate brings an eclectic mix of music and a great sense of humor. Featured on "Sing That Thing!" in 2016, the Mass Whole Notes would love it if you took them for a long walk on the beach followed by a romantic candlelit dinner. And really, with sweet sounds like this, why wouldn’t you?

Evan Feist, Michael Klein, Brian O’Connell, Eric Chung, and Michela Gardner make up a well-rounded judging panel, tasked with deciding the fate of these talented Boston-area groups.

LOS ANGELES REGIONAL

LA will take the spotlight at El Segundo High School with last year’s champion, Top Shelf Vocal, hosting six competitors.

Business Casual

The 2017 Bay Area champions are bringing their talents south for another shot at the big stage. Known for magnetic personality and clever original tunes, this group should wow the LA audience.

Swing Shift

Expect jazz tunes, complex harmonies, and delicious blends from this group. Swing Shift's lineup includes members of the SMC Vocal Jazz Ensemble, LA Master Chorale, and LA Choral Lab.

Coast Vocal Collective

Spanning teens to baby boomers, this group hails from Coast Music in Hermosa Beach. What will happen when six distinct individual styles come together to form one blend? We’ll find out!

Have Pitchpipe, Will Travel

A subsection of the L.A. South Towns Show Chorus of Sweet Adelines, this group has a long-standing tradition of excellence. Its members will bring bright style and toe-tapping music with their distinct close harmony sound.

The Over Tones

Another multi-generational group, these singers live for music, acting, and studio production. Directed by Rachel Zumberge, the Over Tones have been singing together since 2015.

Voxy

This San Diego quintet breaks the mold for small contemporary female groups and loves to entertain. You might even want to sing and dance along! Just don’t distract the judges from the on-stage awesomeness.

The LA groups will get invaluable feedback from judges Amy Engelhardt, Ben Lowe, and Christina Wilson.
