Meet The 2018 LAAF Competitors

The 10th edition of the Los Angeles A Cappella Festival is slated to be the fiercest one yet.

The LAAF's scholastic competition takes place Friday, Feb. 9, in El Segundo, California, and has added some new wrinkles to its schedule and scoring metrics.

"This year we're doing things a little bit differently,” said Evan Fraser, the LAAF's competition coordinator. “There will be no eliminations between rounds, so the audience will get a second chance to be wowed by each group.

“We've also upped the weight of how theming is scored in each set so competitors are going to have to bring their A-games in both musical prowess and creativity to win over the judges and take home the win."

Let’s meet the 2018 LAAF competitors:

Unstrumental (Calabasas High School)

With its groove, tuning, and dynamics, it’s hard to remember that this group is in high school.

Founded in 2001, Unstrumental is Calabasas (CA) High Schools's first a cappella group and is extracurricular. Rehearsals take place at lunch and at nights.

Legacy A Cappella (Los Angeles Area High Schools)

Legacy is an “auditioned community youth a cappella group made up of singers aged 13-18 from all over the greater Los Angeles area.”

Directed by Rob Dietz ("The Sing-Off," "Glee"), the group won the Southwest Semifinal of Varsity Vocals’ first Aca Open and competed at the finals at Carnegie Hall.

Resonance (University of California, Los Angeles)

Back competing at LAAF again this year, Resonance also competed in their first ICCA tournament. The group placed second at the Southwest Quarterfinal and third at the Southwest Semifinal, winning awards for Outstanding Arrangement in both rounds.

Bare Rhythm (Calabasas High School)

Also from Calabasas, Bare Rhythm is the high school’s all-female group.

Bare Rhythm's sound is so big and strong, which they employ well in supporting their soloists.

Uniting Voices (UV) (University of California, Irvine)

This coed group from UC Irvine was founded in 1994 and has won its school's largest annual talent competition, Soulstice, in two out of the last three years.

Voicebox (University of Central Florida)

Under the direction of Harrison Acosta, Voicebox took the ICCA South and SoJam in 2016.

Check out “Sarajevo,” which was inspired by the book "The Cellist of Sarajevo" and originally performed by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Hosted by LoveNotes Quartet

LoveNotes began as one of the Sweet Adelines International Young Women In Harmony quartets in 2002.

In 2009, they graduated to the International level and became regional champions for the Pacific Shores Region 12, which was the same year they won first place at their regional Harmony Sweepstakes (runners-up at Nationals).
