The Dutch Organic Choir was awarded "Most Innovative Performance" at the 2017 Aarhus Vocal Festival in Aarhus, Denmark, earlier this month. The group was founded by Merel Martens and Peder Karlsson (Real Group) three years ago and bases its structure on the "Organic Choir" concept, which calls on DOC's 11 members to make "style-free acapella music with rotating leadership."
We sing only original compositions and improvised songs. In our concerts, we like to let the audience participate to immerse them in the full organic musical experience.

The concept was developed at the Real Group Academy by Karlsson and spawned a thesis from Martens.

"It's essential that the group functions in a supportive way, being respectful and open to each other; we also want to sing, not have endless discussions during rehearsals!" the Dutch Organic Choir states on its site.
"We've set up a few instruments to facilitate this. One of the nicest ones is that of the 'bollplank.' That's a Swedish concept that roughly translates to buddy. If you feel you want to do something with the group but need someone to help you, you ask them as your bollplank."
