Now as many of you know, Christopher Diaz, Richard Steighner, and Alfredo Austin were part of the five-member vocal group The Exchange on NBC's "The Sing Off." Earlier this year, the trio decided to take a hiatus from the group to pursue a side project, and Freedom's Boombox was born.

This new group started out with a simple goal of scoring some college market gigs, and Austin told us that "there is no pressure to make this grow any faster than it will naturally" following the release of Freedom's Boombox's first EP "Modern Vinyl" this month.

As a trio instead of a quintet, the most obvious difference between Freedom's Boombox and The Exchange is the group's size, which results in a distinct arranging process and delivery style. While the vibe is a bit more chill than The Exchange, there's still that entertainingly creative style that can connect with an audience.

Also, you'll be able to hear a bit more of what each member is doing during a performance as well as the group's versatility. You'd be surprised at what can be accomplished with just three voices. So if you catch a show, expect to have a "snappin' clappin' good time" filled with silly banter in a chill charming atmosphere.

The idea and the initial inspiration for "Modern Vinyl" kind of happened by accident.

Steighner and Austin were arranging a pretty straightforward version of Drake's "One Dance" one night but their brains weren't quite working anymore as they had been arranging the whole day.

So they decided to get some sleep and give it the "morning after" test. They woke up, played it back on my monitors, but they didn't really dig it.

"So Richard sighs and jokingly starts singing the One Dance lyrics in a 'crooner' style and a light bulb went off!" Austin told FloVoice. "It was like, OK that's kind of cheeky, and it can totally work!

"Richard needed a little convincing but once the intro was arranged, the rest came very quickly. We did a live video of it and posted it to Facebook, and when all the sharing and reposting was done it had received about 3M views! We were surprised, but we figured, 'Hey people dig this', so we started making throwback influenced arrangements and vids of top 40 tunes."

We took influences from a lot of doo-wop/big band jazz styles to create a vibe and sound that we feel is a little different but interesting and engaging.
