#FNF: Shure Acquires Antares To Release 'Auto-Tune' Microphone Series
By Charlie Friday

Microphone giant Shure announced today that it is acquiring Antares, the software developer most known for the pitch-correction software Auto-Tune.

Antares first released Auto-Tune in the spring of 1997. It's first notable uses in mainstream music were on Cher's 1999 chart-topper "Believe" and Eiffel 65's one-hit wonder "Blue (Da Ba Dee)."  When pushing the software algorithm to the maximum settings, it creates a unique digital glitchy sound used often by artists such as T-Pain.

Following the acquisition announcement, Shure revealed that it will launch a new series of microphones with integrated, real-time Auto-Tune. Primarily, Antares' famous tool is used as a post-processing utility in the studio, but there have been instances of using it in real time for live performances. In these cases, it is used as a tonal effect, adding a subtle glitching to vocals.

The new series of microphones designed by Shure will have a next-gen integrated control circuit that can apply, for the first time, the full range of pitch correction to vocals in real time.

A spokesperson for Shure stated, "We're thrilled to get these microphones into the hands of singers and producers. They really level the playing field, and now, literally, no one needs to be able to sing well to be a star. It will allow the performers and music creators to focus on more important things and remove the constant work and worry of singing in tune."

There will be two main lines of the new microphones: for live performances, prominently featuring the iconic SM-58 Dynamic microphone, and for studio work, with Shure's full range of large diaphragm condensers. The control circuit can be activated and configured through a micro USB port placed inconspicuously on the microphone body. Output ettings run the gamut from "I'm an amazing singer" to "Daft Punk" and are configurable through Shure's new line of Auto-Tune Mic applications, set to release alongside the microphones for Windows, OSX, Android, and iOS.

Pricing and a firm release date are still TBA as Shure and Antares work out the final details of the merger.
