How Can You reCALibrate?
Where else can you learn from Broadway songwriters, have in-depth discussions with active performers, enjoy time by a lake, and maybe take in some morning yoga?

How about recording a song and then sharing s'mores by the campfire?

Hosted by the Contemporary A Cappella League, the new vocal music event reCALibrate is offering just that on August 18-20 at the Poconos Retreat Center in East Stroudsburg, PA.

"I was excited to see all the new CAL-style groups popping up around the world, along with competitions like the Aca Open to support this part of the art," CAL Board member J-M Erlendson said "I can't wait to meet these people at reCALibrate, bringing together the whole community to learn, share and laugh together!"

Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, the setting for the weekend is just about 90 minutes from New York City and Philadelphia. With beautiful cabins on the lake, a pool, and wide variety of outdoor activities, it should provide the perfect atmosphere to help attendees reset, dig deep creatively, and relax with both old and new friends.

(And for those of you a bit camping averse -- consider this a bit more like glamping. Sleeping and bathing facilities are all indoors.)

Highlighting the weekend are keynote speakers Sara Wordsworth and Russ Kaplan, writers for the first all-a cappella Broadway show, "In Transit."

Aside from learning about their experience working on the show, Wordsworth and Kaplan will lead workshops on original songwriting and arranging to help budding writers bring their ideas to life using a cappella.

"I'm excited to get to know and bond with other CAL groups that I wouldn't normally get to see," first-year board member and Chromatix leader Taryn Soza said. "I'm also excited to meet Sara and Russ! It's going to be awesome!"

Outside of the keynote classes, CAL will also host a series of roundtable discussions on business practices, stage presence, loop stations, improv, vocal percussion, and more.

Throughout the weekend, all participants will be invited to lend their voices to a retreat-wide studio track and perform a few songs together on professional equipment. The performance and recording experiences will be complete with tutorials and feedback for recreating the experience after the retreat.

Breaks are scheduled in so that attendees can enjoy the spoils of the lake, pool, and other outdoor activities. A good old-fashioned campfire with s'mores included is also planned for Saturday evening.

With this new style of a cappella getaway, CAL aims to inspire network groups and other adult singers to do even more with their music.

Lodging, food, and retreat activities are all included in the reCALibrate weekend pass, which is available on the event's official site

The deadline to register is Friday, August 11, and all are welcome.

CAL membership is not required.
