Throwback Thursday: Tufts Beelzebubs Featuring Deke Sharon In 1991
Deke Sharon is widely known as the "father of contemporary a cappella." He's directly responsible for bringing a cappella into the mainstream with projects such as "The Sing Off," Total Vocal, "Pitch Perfect," and CASA itself. It's safe to say that the former Tufts Beelzebubs singer is to thank/blame for the current sound of modern a cappella, having created the dense vocal-instrumental sound while attending Tufts University and subsequently spreading it around the world.

"After four years in the Bubs, I said, 'I want everyone to have the amazing experiences I've had: the connections with others, the experiences, the groundbreaking harmony,'" Sharon said on the Tufts Beelzebubs' site. "My life's work, to spread harmony through harmony, grew directly out of my days singing and directing the group. I joke that I didn't go to Tufts University, I went to Beelzebubs University."

In this video from 26 years ago, Sharon can be seen singing lead in his final show with the Beelzebubs.

When asked about this performance, Sharon said:

When you first get in the Bubs, you have to write an introduction/skit for your first show. We decided to do a two-man, two-minute version of 'The Wizard of Oz,' and unlike most frosh skits, people loved it. So it stayed in rotation and became a classic. This performance is my final concert with the Bubs, four years later.
